UN sym­pa­thises with flood vic­tims, pledges sup­port

THE United Na­tions has ex­pressed con­cern over the re­cent flood­ing that claimed hun­dreds of lives and ren­dered thou­sands home­less in Nige­ria. The Sec­re­tary- Gen­eral Sec­re­tary, An­tónio Guter­res, in a state­ment yes­ter­day by his spokesman, Stéphane Du­jar­ric, con­doled with the fam­i­lies of the vic­tims, as­sur­ing the Nige­rian gov­ern­ment of his sup­port. The state­ment read in part: “The Sec­re­tary-gen­eral is deeply sad­dened by re­ports that 200 peo­ple have died, 1,300 in­jured and nearly two mil­lion af­fected by re­cent flood­ing in ar­eas along the Niger and Benue rivers in Nige­ria.”
