Robbers attack bank customer in Surulere

- By Odita Sunday

ARmedrobbers operating on two motorcycles yesterday attacked a man who had gone to withdraw an unspecified amount of money from an ATM facility in front of a bank on Bode Thomas road, Surulere, Lagos State.

It was learnt that the robbers shot the man on the leg before zooming off with his bag containing the cash. Eyewitness said the incident, which happened around noon, sent both customers and staff of the bank running away for their lives.

Although the news that earlier filtered in from the scene was that the robbers had attacked the bank before disappearing with cash running into several millions of naira, a worker at the bank who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the victim was rushed to an undisclosed hospital in the area where he was treated. He said the shooting caused panic inside the banking hall.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chike Oti, who confirmed the attack, said the victim had gone to the bank to carry out some financial transactions. He said the man was on his way back when he saw a friend who was riding on a motorbike.

“While he was discussing with his friend, two men on a motorcycle cornered him and demanded for the bag containing the cash. The man refused and ran towards the bank probably to seek refuge, but the robbers trailed him close to the bank, shot him on his leg and went away with the bag.”
