Court grants him bail on self-recognition

Police arraign Adeleke, others over alleged exam malpractices

THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the Osun State September 22, 2018 election, Ademola Adeleke, was yesterday arraigned by the police on a four-count charge bordering on examination malpractices.

Adeleke was arraigned before a Federal High Court, Abuja, alongside his brother, Sikiru Adeleke and three others, including the Principal, Ojo-aro Community Grammar School, Ojo-aro, Osun State, Alhaji Aregbesola Mufutau.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them. Counsel to Adeleke, Dr. Alex Izinyon (SAN), who drew the attention of the court to a bail application dated and filed on October 12, 2018 on behalf of his client, said Adeleke was still enjoying administrative bail granted him by the police and had not jumped bail since then.

He said Adeleke would always appear in court for his trial if granted bail.

Also, counsel to the second and third defendants, Nathaniel Oke (SAN) and Abdulsalam Abdulfatah respectively, moved the bail applications for their clients.

Meanwhile, the court declined move by Oke to move an oral application for the fourth and fifth defendants.

As the prosecution counsel, Simon Laung, did not oppose the bail applications, the trial judge, Justice Edward Ekwo, granted Adeleke bail on selfrecognition while the second and third defendants were granted bail in the sum of N2 million each.

While Adeleke was asked by the court to sign an undertaking to always attend trial and not to travel out of the country without the permission of the court, the second and third defendants were asked to provide a surety each in the sum of N2 mil- lion.

The sureties, in addition, shall be owners of landed property within the jurisdiction of the court, which shall be verified by the registrar of the court.

They were also to submit their international passports to the court and never travel out of the country without obtaining permission from the court.

However, Justice Ekwo ordered that the fourth and fifth defendants, Gbadamosi Ojo and Dare Olutope, be remanded in prison custody since they did not apply for bail.

He then adjourned the matter till December 17, 18 and 19 for commencement of trial.
