Management crucial to institutional success, says don

- By Iyabo Lawal

APROFESSOR of Educational Management, University of Ibadan (UI), Adebola Jaiyeoba has identified management as the main ingredient to unlock the lofty goals of education at all levels.

She stated this while delivering the 43rd inaugural lecture of the Faculty of Education, saying that apart from poor management, the institutions have also been greatly affected by a myriad of challenges that have bedeviled the sector in the last few decades.

In her lecture titled, “Management: The key to institutional success,” the erudite scholar lamented that poor funding, inadequate infrastructure, lack of teaching and learning tools, indiscipline, poor governance, politicisation of education as well as corruption among others are some of the factors inhibiting qualitative learning and institutional success. As part of her recommendations, Prof. Jaiyeoba said government must ensure adequate preparations before the take off of new educational policies, while also looking at the relevance of educational quali- fication, experience and exposure of school administrators.

She added that regular training should be provided for administrators and management teams in order to enhance their managerial competence.

Besides, she opined that agencies such as the National Universities Commission (NUC), National Council for Colleges of Education (NCCE) and National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) must discharge their statutory duties with greater efficiency to promote institutional success.

Prof Jayeoba further stressed that participation and motivation of stakeholders and staff of institutions must be encouraged, remunerated and motivated in a way that would enhance performance.

Citing the importance of management to our everyday living, the erudite scholar recommended that the University of Ibadan, should introduce a basic course in this regard for all undergraduate students as General Studies (GES) saying this would go a long way in equipping graduates with the necessary background to achieving success in their endeavours.
