NBM sues for calm, peace over shifting of polls

ICE flay DSS invitation of INEC officials

- From Kelvin Ebiri, Port Harcourt

TBlack Movement (NBM) of Africa has charged Nigerians to remain peaceful, calm and resolute in the wake of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’S postponement of the general elections.

It regretted the material and financial sacrifices that may have been made, especially by those who travelled across the country to perform their civic duties before the sudden cancellation of the exercise.

Its National President, Chief Felix Kupa, in a state- ment noted: “It is better we get it right as a nation and avoid chaos and anarchy that could arise due to disenfranchisement of some persons.”

He enjoined the citizens to come out en-masse to vote candidates of their choice on Saturday in the spirit of patriotism and betterment of the nation.

While commending local and foreign observers for keeping faith in the nation and its development, Kupa urged the youths to eschew violence and vices that could endanger the coun- try’s democracy. The NBM leader cautioned politicians and stakeholders in the electoral process against inciting remarks and violent conduct before, during and after the elections.

He added that the relevant bodies would have learnt one or two lessons from the situation to avoid future occurrences.

Also, the Initiative for Credible Elections (ICE) said the invitation of some INEC commissioners by the Directorate of State Services (DSS) over the postponed elections smacks of intimidation.

ICE conveners, Ledum Mitee and Dr. Sofiri Peterside, said amid the tension already generated in the country over the botched elections, it was worrisome that the DSS should single out some commissioners for questioning over the postponed polls. The duo said while it is desirable that the actual reasons that necessitated the postponement be investigated to prevent a reoccurrence, it was their considered view that INEC carries out such investigation itself.
