The Court of Appeal ruled that President Olusegun Obasanjo had no legal power to sack his deputy, Atiku Abubakar, for joining an opposition party.

• 2007 - USA

Jerry Yang (38), co-founder of Yahoo, donated $75 million to Stanford University. Yang and David Filo founded Yahoo in 1995.

• 2006 - Liberia

Liberia's president inaugurate­d a truth commission to investigat­e crimes and human rights abuses committed in the country over the last quarter century.

• 1999 - Nigeria

National Assembly elections held to signal Nigeria’s return to democracy. 469 seats in a bicameral legislatur­e were vied for by three parties. 360 members were for the House of Representa­tives and 109 were for Senators.

• 1998 - S/leone

In Sierra Leone former pres. Joseph Momoh was caught while trying to escape the capital under disguise as a woman. He was a close advisor to the junta that ousted Pres. Kabbah.

• 1998 - USA

American skater, Tara Lipinski became at age 15 the youngest gold medalist in Olympics history.
