Diocese Of Okrika Enjoins Nigerians Not To Lose Hope

- By Charles Ogan

THE Diocese of Okrika, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), has noted with concern the worsening insecurity, economic and other challenges facing the nation and called on Nigerians not to lose hope, but to affirm their belief in God, Who has the capacity to change the situation and make leaders change their attitude, practise good governance and see themselves as trustees.

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the 1st Session of the 6th Synod of the Diocese, held at St. Gabriel’s Anglican Church,

Bolo Deanery in Ogu/bolo Local Government Area of Rivers State from May 9 to 12, 2019. The event was presided over by the Diocesan Bishop, Rt. Revd. Tubokosemie Robinson Abere.

The Synod congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and other returning and newly elected leaders across the country and hoped that the new dispensation would be geared towards alleviating the masses’ suffering. It also prayed for continued recovery of the nation’s economy and for integrity, fairness and credibility to bequeath a just, egalitarian and prosperous nation to the people.

The Synod, however, condemned the wanton killings and violence orchestrated by armed personnel in military uniforms during the elections, particularly in Rivers State, and urged Federal Government to take constitutional measures that will prevent the Armed Forces from direct involvement in future electoral process.

The Synod also stressed the need for the Church to engage in ecumenism, in view of constant threats against Christian faith, and for other Christian bodies to synergise efforts.

The communiqué was signed by the Bishop, Rt. Revd. Tubokosemie Abere, the Clerical Synod Secretary, Venerable Ibatamunogoma Lawrence and the Diocesan Communicator, Ms. Mediline Tador.
