Herdsmen Kill Hunter In Ekiti State

- From Ayodele Afolabi, Ado Ekiti

YEt-to-be identified suspected Fulani herdsmen have allegedly killed a hunter in Orin Ekiti in Ido Osi Local Council of Ekiti State.

The hunter was reportedly killed at midnight, while hunting for animals with his colleagues.

This came barely 24 hours after an undergraduate lady was killed in Ise Ekiti.

An eyewitness, also a hunter, who was in the bush when the incident happened, Mr. Adeniyi Ajayi,

said they met the herdsmen numbering about 30 in an abandoned piggery farm in the town. When they attempted to inquire what they were doing there, the herdsmen opened fire on them but the deceased was not lucky, as the bullet hit him.

He alleged the herdsmen were kidnappers, using the forest as a hide-out for their kidnapping activities. He said the police had deposited the hunter’s body at the morgue.

When the police visited the scene, such items as knife, cutlass, dagger and slippers were recovered.

The incident led to a protest by people of the community, who called on government to take measures to check the menace of herdsmen.

The protesters made bonfire on the streets to show their grievances.

Addressing newsmen, High Chief Francis Falua and Chairman of Rice Farmers in Ekiti State, Mr. Kolawole Rotimi, said same herdsmen allegedly killed a pregnant woman last year.

They appealed to Governor Kayode Fayemi to wade into the matter before it gets out of hands.

When contacted, the police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Police Command, Caleb Ikechukwu confirmed the incident, and said a manhunt had been launched to arrest the killers.
