• 2018 - Nigeria
The founder and presiding bishop of Living Faith Church, aka Winners’ Chapel, David Oyedepo, asked Pres. Muhammadu Buhari to resign over persistent Fulani militant herdsmen killings, joining other notable clerics – including Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church, Abuja,cardinal Onaiyekan and a former Archbishop of the Catholic Church in Lagos, Cardinal Anthony Okogie – who have asked Buhari to quit his position over failure to secure the lives of Nigerians. • National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, threatened to suspend and thereafter expel the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, from the party if he failed to inaugurate the board members of federal agencies and parastatal under his ministry.
• 2016 - UK
Britain stunned the world by voting to leave the European Union, becoming the first major country to leave the bloc in EU history. British Prime Minister David Cameron said he will stepdown in October after leading campaign to keep Britain in the EU. Financial markets plunged after the news, with value of British pound dropping to the lowest level against the dollar since 1985.

Sally Ride (61), the first US woman to travel to space and an advocate for science education, died after a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer.

Google unveiled a new service “Knol," an Internet encyclopedia, in which contributing authors would share in ad revenue
• 2004 - USA
President Bush froze the assets of former Liberian President Charles Taylor, his family and top aides and accused them of undermining the country's transition to democracy.
• 1970 - Oman
Qaboos bin Said al Said became the Sultan of Oman after overthrowing his father, Said bin Taimur to end the 10-year civil war.
• 1962 - USA
Jackie Robinson became the first African American to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame
• 1952 - Egypt
Gen. Mohammed Neguib seized power in Egypt. There was a revolution, King Farouk I abdicated. Col. Gamal Nasser overthrew the monarchy and established Egyptian sovereignty after 2,300 years of foreign domination.
