Delta gives succour to community as flood kills three
Shas come the way of PolobuboTeskelewu community, Warri North Council of Delta State, where flood killed three children, as the state government has delivered relief materials to the residents.
Delivery of the materials started on Wednesday till yesterday by a team led by co-chairman of Delta State Flood Management Committee, Omamofe Pirah, who said the relief items would cushion the effect of the flood that ravaged the community.
Pirah, who spoke to journalists shortly after he toured the area with his team, assured that government would do all it could to assist communities in the state affected by flood.
President of PolobuboTsekelewu National Council (PNC), Mr. Ebilate MacYoroki, said the relief materials would reassure the people that they had not been totally abandoned to their fate, just as he commended the state government for the quick response.
Mac-yoroki said despite the numerous socio-economic and environmental challenges confronting the community, it had remained one of the most peaceful in the state.
He noted that if the oil companies operating in the area and the Federal Government had responded quickly to their cries, there would not have been protests.
“We thank the governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, and his team in the State Executive Council for this response. We are especially delighted that it is coming swiftly.
“However, we are asking that this intervention should not stop with relief materials; they should go on to prevail on Chevron to correct this en vironmental error, which has brought so much pain, discomfort and death to Polobubo; they should block the channel they dug from the ocean into our community and dredge our badly silted waterways.
“We also call on the Federal Government to take the suffering of Polobubo people and their en vironment more seriously.”
