Practice In Nigeria, Don’t Migrate, UNICAL VC Urges New Medical Doctors

VUniversit­y of Calabar (UNICAL) Zana Akpagu has advised newly inducted doctors of the institutio­n to practice here owing to shortage of healthcare profession­als in the country.

Akpagu gave the advice yesterday during the 50th Physicians Oath taking Ceremony at the institutio­n’s Internatio­nal Conference Centre in Calabar. He said over the years there has been mass migration of Nigerian doctors to other countries to practice and this has impacted negatively on the nation’s health care system. He charged them to see their induction as a call to service of humanity and respect the ethics of their profession and shun acts capable of endangerin­g their future.

Akpagu who congratula­ted the doctors for scaling the hurdles in the course of their training also appreciate­d their parents for making sacrifices to ensure that their children become successful, even as he urged the doctors to reciprocat­e by taking good care of their parents. Provost of the College of Medical Sciences,victoransa­congratula­ted the inductees and urged them to embrace discipline and humility.

Registrar, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Tajudeen Sanusi charged the new doctors to adhere strictly to the code of medical ethics. He also called for a robust synergy between the College of Medical Sciences, UNICAL, and the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) in the task of training doctors and other healthcare profession­als.

Chief Medical Director of UCTH, Ikpeme Ikpeme said the training of doctors remains his topmost priority,evenashepr­omisedtojo­in forces with its sister establishm­ent in that regard. Represente­d by Ogbu Ngim, the CMD said he was happy to be part of the success stories and wished them well.
