‘How corruption, dearth of research threatens industrial development’

- From Michael Egbejule, Benin City

PRESIDENT, Nigeria Association of Mathematical Physics

(NAMP), Prof. Garba Babaji has decried the dearth of well-formulated research and development policies.

He said sustainable industrial development can only be realised in a conductive environment devoid of corruption.

Babaji said achieving sustainable industrial development could only be hinged on the provision of vital infrastructures such as electricity, super computers, state of the art research equipment, eradication of corruption and a well formulated and religiously implemented research and development policy.

He spoke at the 30th annual colloquium and congress of the Nigerian Association of Mathematical Physics

(NAMP) hosted by Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO) with the theme, “Emerging trends in mathematical physics and it’s implication for sustainable industrial development in Nigeria.”

Vice chancellor, Igbinedion University Okada (IUO), Prof Lawrence Ezemonye, said the gathering is a reflection of the ivory tower’s pursuit for academic excellence. Ezemonye who noted that mathematics and physics are inseparable in their role to national development, said the wide spread application of physics is far reaching in technology advancement.

“It is known that any form of technology in our daily life today relates to physics. It contributes to technological infrastructure. Physics has improved the quality of our lives through the invention and use of high tech equipment in spacecraft, medicine, engineering and science. “Ezemonye said.

Prof. Olufemi Adesina of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-ife, spoke on “Why mathematics physics matters in sustainable industrial development in Nigeria.”
