• 2016 - Nigeria

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka came down hard on Nigerians who questioned the sincerity of his claim to tear his United States green card, vowing to hold a private funeral on January 20, 2017, day United States Presidente­lect, Donald Trump, will be sworn in. He threatened to also move his foundation out of U.S. in protest against commentari­es generated by the Green card issue.

Prosecutor­s at the Internatio­nal Criminal Court, ICC withdrew their crimes against humanity charges against Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta. Kenyatta said he was "vindicated" after the ICC'S decision.

• 2013 - S/africa

Nelson Mandela, first president of South Africa, died aged 95. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

• 2005 - USA

A new version of King Kong, directed by Peter Jackson, premiered in New York City.

At the opening session of CHOGM in Abuja, the summit of Britain and its former colonies, British PM, Tony Blair, urged African leaders not to lift Zimbabwe's suspension from the Commonweal­th.
