# Justicefor­uwa: Students protest, demand justice for raped, murdered varsity student

Arrest suspected killers of corps member in Osun

WITH chants of ‘ Say no to Rape’ and ‘ Justice for Uwa’, protesters, including students of the University of Benin ( UNIBEN), activists and concerned individual­s yesterday stormed the headquarte­rs of the state police command in Edo State demanding justice for Vera Uwaila Omozuwa.

Clad in all black and carrying several placards amid singing of solidarity songs, the protesters said the increasing cases of rape and violence against the female gender with some lukewarm attitude of security agencies to nip it in the bud, call for serious protest beyond mere condemnati­on from the comfort of people’s homes and offices.

Uwaila, a 100- level student of the Department of Microbiolo­gy in UNIBEN was reported to have been raped and killed by some hoodlums inside a church where she went to read at the Ikpoba Hill area of Benin City, the Edo State Capital. This had sparked outrage with # JusticeFor­uwa dominating social media trend since Sunday.

The protesters wearing black outfits and bearing placards decrying rape staged a walk from the

Kings Square area of Benin City and eventually took their message to the state police command headquarte­rs.

The Deputy Commission­er of Police, Operations, Ayoola Ajala, who received the protesters, assured them that investigat­ions have commenced and arrests have already been made in connection to Uwa’s murder. He also debunked allegation­s that the police station where the matter was reported to refused to look into the incident for lack of funding.

Uwa’s siblings, who were also part of the protest, joined in demanding that justice be served promptly.

The Niger Delta Students’ Union Government ( NDSUG) has condemned the brutal rape and murder of its female member, Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa. The Senate President of NDSUG, Jimmy Success, in a statement in Port Harcourt, called on the school management and the security agencies to swiftly investigat­e the tragedy and bring the perpetrato­rs to justice.

THE Lagos State police command provost department has commenced trial of two officers who allegedly killed 17- year- old Tina Ezekwe in Lgaos last week. While Inspector Oguntola Olamigoke is now facing police orderly room trial, ASP Theophilus Otobo, as a senior officer has been served an official query in line with police service commission’s rules.

It would be recalled that on May 29, the Commission­er of Police, Lagos Command, CP Hakeem Odumosu, ordered an indepth investigat­ion into the circumstan­ces surroundin­g the death of Tina Ezekwe at Iyana- oworo area of Lagos. According to Lagos police spokesman, Bala Elkana, “investigat­ions so far revealed that the conduct of the two police officers linked with the incident fell short of profession­al standards.

“In view of the above, the command has commenced internal disciplina­ry proceeding­s against the two officers. The ASP would be appearing before the Force Disciplina­ry Board sitting in Abuja and their recommende­d punishment­s would be forwarded to the Police Service Commission for approval.” Meanwhile, the Osun State student community, I wish to extend my condolence­s to the family of the depolice command has arrested four suspected killers of a serving corps member identified as Adebayo Mukaila. Some suspected robbers on January 28, 2020 shot dead a member of National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC) near his shop in the Omo- West area of Osogbo where he operated a Point of Sales ( POS). The robbers carted away recharge cards and some amount of money.

The four suspects arrested: Jelil Kareem ( 29), Oludayo Oludele ( 34), Awodeji Muyiwa ( 36), and Anifowoshe Buliaminu ( 25), were dragged before an Osun State Magistrate sitting in Osogbo on five counts bothering on armed robbery, unlawful possession of arms, conspiracy, unlawful shot, and stealing.

The prosecutor, ASP Idoko John, told the court that the three defendants committed the crime on January 28, 2020 at about 10: 15p. m. at Omo West area of Osogbo by robbing and killing Mr. Adebayo Mukaila and collecting recharge cards worth N300.000 and stealing the sum of N2,500 from him.

The offences were said to be contrary to and punishable under section 6( b), 1( 1),( 2)( a) 324,319, and 427 of the criminal code, ceased and also crave the indulgence of the Students’ Union Government in the University of Benin and the school management to implore better means of reducing and curtailing these violent occurrence­s against the girl child and students in general. “We also want to appeal to the conscience of our youths to abstain from any form of aggression against their fellow youths especially the tender females. I hope that the perpetrato­rs will be brought to book. We demand justice for this innocent girl and hope that the perpetrato­r will be brought to book. I call on the State government and all security outfit to swiftly investigat­e this issue and bring to book the perpetrato­r of this wicked act.”

However, he noted that Anifowoshe Buliaminu did not participat­e in the killing but unlawfully received recharge cards stolen from Adebayo Mukaila from one Jelili Kareem known to have been stolen or obtained by any act constituti­ng a felony and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 427 of the Criminal Code Cap 3 Vol Il laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.

The plea of the three accused person was not taken except Anifowoshe Buliaminu, who pleaded not guilty to one charge preferred against him. Defence counsel to the first and fourth defendants, Kehinde Adepoju, applied for the bail of the two in most liberal terms assuring that the accused will not jump bail if granted.

The magistrate, Awodele Modupe, ordered that Jelil Kareem, Oludayo Oludele and Awodeji Muyiwa be remanded in prison. He granted Anifowoshe Buliaminu bail with the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties and adjourned the case to 13th of July 2020 for hearing.
