Lagos plans to build more schools to cater for out- of- school children

- By Gbenga Salau

LAGOS State Government has expressed its readiness to build more schools to encourage enrolment of school- age children and take care of out- of- school children.

The state’s Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, said this during a meeting with the Chief Resilience Officer ( CRO), Lagos State Resilience Office ( LASRO), Gbolahan Owodunni Oki and Chairman, Itire/ Ikate Local Council Development Area ( LCDA), Dr. Ahmed Olanrewaju Apatira, at Ikeja on the proposal for the establishment of Itire/ Ikate Model College.

In a statement, yesterday, Adefisayo also hinted that special provision was made for additional schools in 2021 budget, while existing school infrastructure would be constantly upgraded to make the teaching and learning environment more conducive.

She said that education remained a potential weapon with which the government can fight crime, ignorance, poverty and under- development, adding that the ongoing reforms embarked upon by the current administration would not only improve the state’s quality of education but also encourage mass enrolment of pupils of school age.

The commissioner promised that the proposal for the Itire/ Ikate Model College would be taken to the governor and the State Executive Council for consideration, noting that the establishment of a secondary school in Itire/ Ikate community is long overdue.

Earlier, the Chief Resilience Officer said that LASRO, in conjunction with the Itire/ Ikate LCDA, had come to make a presentation in favour of possible consideration for the establishment of Itire/ Ikate Model College in line with the state government’s resilience initiatives in educational development.

RIVERS State Governor Nyeson Ezenwo Wike, yesterday, commiserated with Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State over the death of his Commissioner for Transport, Mathias Ekweremadu, who died last Thursday on active service.

Wike also condoled with the former Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who is the elder brother of the deceased, over “this painful death.”

Wike, who spoke when he led a delegation from Rivers State to Enugu State Government House and residence of Senator Ekweremadu, respectively, on a condolence visit, described the death as unfortunate and a great loss to the Ekweremadu family, the Government of Enugu State and the entire people of the state.

The Rivers State governor said he was devastated when he received the sad news of the death of Ekweremadu’s younger brother.

Wike equally visited the immediate family of the late Ekweremadu at his Enugu residence where his consoled the wife and children, asking them to “take heart as Christians and leave everything to God”.

He urged Ugwuanyi, Senator Ekweremadu and other members of the Ekweremadu family to take solace in the fact that it was the will of God, and that the late Transport Commissioner, who was former Chairman of Aninri Local Council and former Chief Whip of the State House of Assembly and represented Aninri Constituency, between 2013 and 2019, lived a worthy life and served the nation, Enugu State and humanity meritoriously.
