Lawmaker urges Ogoni warring communities to maintain peace

- By Leo Sobechi

FOLLOWING the communal crisis between LuuSue and Zor- Sogho communities in Khana Council of Rivers State, representative of Khana/ Gokana Federal Constituency, Dumnamene Robinson Dekor, has charged them to maintain peace.

The crisis escalated on Wednesday, February 3, 2021, after five persons were killed, property worth millions of naira destroyed and the areas deserted. Speaking during a visit to the area at the weekend, Dekor urged the warring communities to sheathe their swords and allow peace to reign, saying cultism played a major role in the crisis and reminded the people that only peace could engender socio- economic development of the area.

Chairman of Khana Council, Lahteh Loolo, representative of Khana Constituency 1 in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Bariene Deeyah, his Khana Constituency 2 counterpart, Prince Ngbor and the Bori Divisional Police Officer ( DPO), among others accompanied Dekor on the visit.

Square, where the police and Khana Security Planning Advisory Committee ( KHASPAC), provide security to the locals, Dekor lamented that the mayhem had turned most residents into beggars.

He assured that government would leave no stone unturned to arrest and prosecute perpetrators of violence in the area.

Also at Zor- Sogho, Dekor urged the people to eschew violence, stressing that the Khana Council chairman had already summoned a security meeting on the crisis.

“Government will be fair and unbiased in resolving the dispute. Representatives of the area at local, state and National Assembly will join the council chairman to review the situation and ensure that the right things are done to restore peace and harmony in the area,” he said.

Dekor added that he was in Sogho community to condole with the chairman and people, pointing out that he was accompanied by his team on a visit to the feuding communities and had heard from both sides. “We observed that there are elements of cultism and some long standing animosity dating back to 2012. But by the grace of God, we shall join the council chairman to resolve the disputes. A security meeting has been convened to review the issues.

“Loolo has also directed that both groups come with members of their communities, who will also join us to seek permanent solution to the crisis.

“As a federal lawmaker, I will continue to play my part to ensure that peace and tranquility prevail in my constituency and that is why I am here,” he added.
