NPC commissioner warns against population crisis in 2050
NIGERIA may be plunged into population crisis in 2050, if the Federal Government does not take adequate measures to control it, says the Federal Commissioner, National Population Commission ( NPC), Dr. Mohammed Duruguwa.
According to him, overpopulation is a time bomb in Nigeria, which may impact negatively on the economy.
The Kaduna State governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress ( APC) said that Nigeria’s population was growing very fast, which may make it the most populous country in the world, compared to the slim resources at its disposal.
The NPC official told newsmen at the Nigeria Union of Journalists ( NUJ) Secretariat in Kaduna that incorrect data about Nigeria’s population figure was responsible for different crises in the country.
He said the youths involved in criminal activities were all products of inaccurate figures of the country’s population.
“The NPC, where I belong to or my primary assignment now, is trying to do its best with the new commissioners that President Muhammadu Buhari swore into office. With our national chairman, I am telling you that we are doing whatever is humanly possible to change the narrative for Nigerians because if we don’t know how many we are, we will never get it right.
“This is where we begin to manage the kind of people we have. Honestly speaking, we should continue to think about this thing. God has blessed us in Nigeria with good journalists. In fact, some can even write things that can change this country, either positively or negatively,” he said.
He urged everyone to do away with lies, in order to move Nigeria forward.
Duruguwa added: “We have to change the narrative; look beyond religion and ethnicity, and focus more on who we are, rather than our differences, we will find solution to the problems of Nigeria. Let us begin to look at ourselves as human beings; that is what will move us forward.”
