‘ How Barriers Against Women Can Be Broken’

- From Gordi Udeajah, Umuahia

WIFE of Imo State deputy governor, Dr. Bola Njoku, has posited that for barriers against women to be broken, they have to be mentored through capacity building.

She described this as a task before the women in addition to encouraging one another.

Njoku, who spoke at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike Women Association ( MOUAUWA), said women ought to be confident and focused in whatever they do.

Njoku was the pioneer president when her husband, Prof. Placid Njoku ( now Imo State deputy governor) was the university’s pioneer Vice Chancellor.

Also, wife of former Governor of Ebonyi State and keynote Speaker Mrs. Eunice Egwu, who spoke on ‘ Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow,’ called for more focus on the flexibility of the inherent abilities in both male and female genders.

Noting that there has been struggle for equality on both gender in areas such as equal opportunities, economic and

political emancipations among others, she attributed the general apathy and male discriminatory disposition as some of the reasons for not making reasonable success on the quest for gender equality.

Mrs. Egwu said, “Fundamentally, we need to analyse our mindset, perception and stereotype attitude and bias towards the female gender. If we all start to treat one another with respect and love irrespective of gender, we will have a better society.”

In her remarks, the host President of MOUAUWA, Dr. Nkechinyere Iwe, described the meeting as special and cited this year’s women day celebration as special one used in celebrating women’s achievements in all aspects of their lives.

She recalled that March 8, every year has been set as a global date for women in recognition of what women and girls stand for around the world.

The event witnessed the launch of MOUAUWA N60 million- coaster bus purchase fund and the conferment of award on the Imo deputy governor’s wife, Dr. Njoku, in recognition of her contributions to the success of the association as the pioneer President.
