Light pollution threatens migratory birds in N’east, says NCF

- From Njadvara Musa, Damaturu

TNigeria Conservation Foundation ( NCF) has said that light pollution threatens migratory birds and waterfowl sanctuaries at the Chad Basin National Park in the North East geopolitical region.

Project Officer of NCF, Harry Hanson, stated this, yesterday, at an event to mark the World Migratory Bird Day ( WMBD) in the Hadejia/ Nguru wetlands, Yobe State.

He said the WMBD themed ‘ Light Pollution: Dim the Light for Birds at Night’ was to conserve and protect the Waterfowls Sanctuary of the Hadejia/ Nguru wetlands of Chad Basin park.

According to him, there should be awareness campaigns to highlight the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats.

He added that NCF was drawing attention to the increased threats faced by the migratory birds, warning that birds’ threatened ecological habitats require international cooperation to conserve across the globe.

The agreement on the conservation of AfricanEurasian Migratory Water birds is an inter- governmental treaty dedicated to the conservation of migratory water birds along with the African- Eurasian Flyway, he noted.

The Agreement covers 255 bird species that are dependent on wetlands for their yearly migratory cycle.
