THREE people were yesterday burnt beyond recognition, while two others sustained injuries in a road accident involving an 18Seater bus, which plunged into a ditch at Ilawe Ekiti in Ekiti State.

The incident threw members of Ilawe Ekiti community into mourning.

An eyewitness told newsmen that the bus driver lost control at the top of the hill, thereby plunging into the deep gully by the side and went into flames.

He said that sympathisers could not immediately rescue the occupants due to the intensity of the fire.

“The fire prevented them from going near the burning vehicle on time. They were able to rescue two occupants alive with serious burns,” he said.

The eyewitness said the injured victims have been taken to Ekiti State University

Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti for treatment.

Confirming the incident, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, said the accident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday.

“Five people were in the vehicle, three of them got burnt to death, while the remaining two were rescued and taken to the hospital.

“Investigation has commenced to ascertain the cause of the accident,” he stated.
