Hop acts out of Africa. At a time when the genre seems to be in its renaissance, MI Abaga continues to prove his mettle as an ‘ undisputed champion’ through his stagecraft and discography. Last weekend, at the Trace Live Concert, in Terra Kulture, Lagos, was enough proof that the superstar is truly one of the boldest and best to ever touch the mic.

After recently hosting PSquare, the organisers at Trace Live decided to rev the nostalgia up a notch as they hosted the rap veteran who wasted no time in performing his classics, including reigning hits.

While it poured heavily outside, the J- town bred rapper poured out bars upon bars from his old catalogue, including songs like Anoti, Action film, and Undisputed, among others. From freestyling over Marvin Gaye’s 80s classic Sexual Healing, to performing his Wande Coalassisted bop, Love Song, the former Choc City boss also showed the softer sides to him.

Other standout moments from his performances include the choreography and choral arrangement he used to perform his classic duet with Djinee, Overkillin. The show was a beautiful sight to behold, and it is interesting to see whether or not Trace Live, in partnership with Bolanle Austen- Peters and the BIGWA initiative will bring more nostalgic acts our way.
