Ex- governorsh­ip aspirant in Ekiti State, Senator Gbenga Aluko, collapsed and died at his office in Abuja. The Ode- Ekiti- born politician was son of late economist, Prof. Sam Aluko He contested for governorsh­ip under the APC in 2018.

Manchester United parted ways with embattled legend, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as the club’s manager.

Nigeria again went into a recession for the second time under Pres. Muhammadu Buhari, this time, the worst since 1987.

There was wild jubilation as 93- year- old Pres. Robert Mugabe resigned after 37 years in power after moves by the military and his political allies to end his rule His former Vice- President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, was sworn in as president.

Operatives of DSS and EFCC clashed when EFCC attempted to arrest the immediate part DSS Director General, Ekpenyong Ita. The DSS refused to hand over Ita to EFCC to explain his role in the arms deal scandal involving ex- NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki ( rtd).

Abdullah Al- Senoussi, Gadhafi's intelligen­ce chief, was captured by revolution­ary fighters not far from where Gadhafi's son was seized a day earlier.

• 2011 - Egypt

Security forces clashed with protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square in third day of violence that turned into the most sustained challenge to the rule of Egypt's military. 24 people were killed.

• 2008 - Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe refused to let ex- UN Secretary- General, Kofi Annan, ex- U. S. Pres. Jimmy Carter and rights advocate Graca Machel to visit the country for a humanitari­an mission. They came as members of The Elders group, formed by ex- South African Pres. Mandela, to foster peace.

Diepreye Alamieyese­igha, Bayelsa State governor, skipped bail and returned home. He had been arrested and charged in UK for money laundering.

• 2002 - Nigeria

In Kaduna protesters rioted over a newspaper article suggesting Islam's founder might have chosen a wife from among contestant­s in the Miss World beauty pageant in Abuja. About 200 people died and the writer of the article was forced to flee to Norway.
