Anambra gov’s tax regime pushing more residents into poverty, says HURIWA

HUMAN Rights Writers Association of Nigeria ( HURIWA), yesterday, condemned the taxation regime of the Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, saying it is burdensome and unbearable.

HURIWA’S National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, in a statement, said rather than have positive results for social development and better welfare of people, the heavy taxation regime of Soludo is pushing residents to poverty.

The group told former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria ( CBN) to discard the extreme CBNlike policies, which, it said, are not workable for the people of the state.

The group said that since his inauguration as the fifth democratically elected governor of the state on March 17, 2022, Soludo has introduced various taxes on poor people of the state.

It noted that heavy taxes are imposed on market men and women, bus drivers, tricycle operators, wheelbarrow pushers, shop owners and hawkers; even mourners, therefore, making the people of the state lament endlessly under such harsh tax regime.
