Foundation decries increasing human rights violations in Bauchi

NIGERIAN Women’s Trust Fund, in collaboration with Child is Gold Foundation, has decried increasing human rights violation in Bauchi State.

The Field Department Officer of the non- governmental organisation, Poro Numzar, stated, yesterday, that over 20 rape cases, early marriages and forced marriage recently were reported in the state, adding that most of these cases occurred among rural dwellers.

Numzar said it became pertinent to partner with the National Human Rights Commission ( NHRC) and rights activists, including legal practitioners, to check the menace.

“We came here to partner with NHRC because we know their role in the area of checking human rights violations,” Numzar said.

According to her, cases of gender- based violence are being reported daily in the society and victims do not know the channels or procedures of seeking justice.

She said: “We want your commission to support the partnership towards achieving the objectives of the project, which includes mitigating gender- based violence that is prevalent in our society today.”

There is need, she added, to strengthen women participation in the electoral process, prompt inclusiveness in governance or leadership in elective or appointive positions without any discrimination based on gender, religion or political affiliation in Bauchi.
