Seven- star Spain runs roughshod over Costa Rica

-

SPAIN outclassed Costa Rica from the opening whistle and cruised to a 7- 0 win in their Group E opener at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, writes tsn. ca.

La Roja got goals from Dani Olmo, Marco Asensio, Gavi, Carlos Soler, Alvaro Morata and a brace from Ferran Torres in the win that saw Spain’s best ever margin of victory at a World Cup. The result matched Costa Rica’s worst ever defeat at a World Cup.

Los Ticos failed to trouble the 2010 World Cup winners at all for the duration of the 90 minutes.

Olmo’s opener in the 12th was a pretty one. Taking a chip from Gavi, the RB Leipzig man shook off marker Oscar Duarte and beat Keylor Navas to make it 1- 0. The goal was Spain’s 100th at World Cup, becoming only the sixth nation to achieve the mark after Brazil, Argentina, France, Italy and Germany.

Spain would make it 2- 0 in the 21st. Receiving a cross from Jordi Alba, Asensio, frozen out of the national team for much of the past two years due to injury, scored his first international goal since 2018.
