River Niger: NIWA restates commitment to moving goods through dredged channel
MANAGINGDirector, National Inland Waterways Authority ( NIWA), Dr. George Moughalu, has restated commitment to moving goods through the dredged channel of River Niger, assuring that the authority is ever ready to encourage and assist companies, as well as transporters to distribute their wares across the country.
Moughalu, who described the exercise as a welcome development, yesterday, in Onitsha, urged businessmen to take advantage of the dredged channel to keep it busy, and at the same time generate money for Federal Government.
Meanwhile, NIWA’S General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Jibril Darda’u, also said that the authority is ensuring safe movement of goods to Onitsha River Port, insisting that movement of goods along the River channel is total and not negotiable.
In a statement yesterday, Darda’u disclosed that NIWA is already collaborating with some Nigerian companies, including West African Ceramic Limited, in the movement of goods through the dredged channel of the River Niger, using its tugboats, piloted by NIWA officials with escort from Inland Waterways Police for adequate security.
