FG tasks traditional rulers on promotion of immunisation, others in S’south communities
EDirector/ Chief Executive Officer, National Primary Health Care Development Agency ( NPHCDA), Dr. Faisal Shuaib, at the weekend, urged traditional rulers to promote immunisation and other healthcare services in their various communities to improve healthcare delivery at the grassroots.
Shuaib spoke in Benin City, Edo State capital, during the inauguration of South South Traditional Leaders’ Committee ( SSTLC) on Primary Health Care Delivery, organised by the Federal Ministry of Health, in collaboration with National Primary Health Care

( NPHCDA).
Shuaib noted that sustainable primary health care delivery system is key in enhancing wellness of people at the grassroots.
He said: “There is no gainsaying that states in the South South, through the exemplary leadership of governors and deputy governors, traditional and religious leaders, development partners and other stakeholders have made significant contributions to continuous strengthening of primary health care, particularly in the zone, and Nigeria, in general.”

In his remarks, Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, expressed optimism that the committee would live up to expectation, saying the impact of the committee would not only save lives, but reduce illnesses in local communities.
On her part, Zonal Director, NPHCDA, South South, Dr . Josephine Obayagbona, said SSTLC would chart a new course in strengthening the health system, and fostering community participation in the natio n’s health care services.
She said: “Primary health care is the cornerstone of a healthy nation. It is the fi rst point of contact for individuals and families in accessing essential health services.
As traditional leaders, you have long been at the forefront of community development, and are connected to your people. Your influence and position provide a unique opportunity to drive positive change in the health sector.
“Your role in advocating and promoting the importance of primary health care cannot be overemphasised. Through your extensive network and community engagements, we can reach even the most remote areas, ensuring that quality health care services are accessible to all.”
