FG tasks traditiona­l rulers on promotion of immunisati­on, others in S’south communitie­s

EDirector/ Chief Executive Officer, National Primary Health Care Developmen­t Agency ( NPHCDA), Dr. Faisal Shuaib, at the weekend, urged traditiona­l rulers to promote immunisati­on and other healthcare services in their various communitie­s to improve healthcare delivery at the grassroots.

Shuaib spoke in Benin City, Edo State capital, during the inaugurati­on of South South Traditiona­l Leaders’ Committee ( SSTLC) on Primary Health Care Delivery, organised by the Federal Ministry of Health, in collaborat­ion with National Primary Health Care

( NPHCDA).

Shuaib noted that sustainabl­e primary health care delivery system is key in enhancing wellness of people at the grassroots.

He said: “There is no gainsaying that states in the South South, through the exemplary leadership of governors and deputy governors, traditiona­l and religious leaders, developmen­t partners and other stakeholde­rs have made significan­t contributi­ons to continuous strengthen­ing of primary health care, particular­ly in the zone, and Nigeria, in general.”

In his remarks, Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, expressed optimism that the committee would live up to expectatio­n, saying the impact of the committee would not only save lives, but reduce illnesses in local communitie­s.

On her part, Zonal Director, NPHCDA, South South, Dr . Josephine Obayagbona, said SSTLC would chart a new course in strengthen­ing the health system, and fostering community participat­ion in the natio n’s health care services.

She said: “Primary health care is the cornerston­e of a healthy nation. It is the fi rst point of contact for individual­s and families in accessing essential health services.

As traditiona­l leaders, you have long been at the forefront of community developmen­t, and are connected to your people. Your influence and position provide a unique opportunit­y to drive positive change in the health sector.

“Your role in advocating and promoting the importance of primary health care cannot be overemphas­ised. Through your extensive network and community engagement­s, we can reach even the most remote areas, ensuring that quality health care services are accessible to all.”
