Hotdocs Film Festival is Already Underway

HE 2024 edition of the Hotdoc film festival is already underway in Canada. Over 168 exceptional documentaries from around the world will be featured at the festival which is I its 31st edition. The 31st edition of the festival opened on April 25 with the international premiere of Luther: Never Too Much . Director Dawn Porter and singer- songwriter Valerie Simpson were in attendance for an introduction and a post- screening Q& A at the opening event. The Hotdocs will close on May 5. Two Nigerian Films Make Durban Filmart Pitch and Finance Forum Shortlist
TWO films by Nigerian- born filmmakers have made the list of 30 selected projects for the pitch and finance forum of the 2024 Durban Filmmart otherwise called DFM. The Nigerian projects are Londoner, a feature film, which has Pamela Drameh, as producer and Babatunde Apalowo, as director and an animation titled, The Legends of Bulan, which has Ferdinand Adimefe as producer and Azubuike Joseph Duru as director. The other projects are from South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, Mali and so on. Durban Filmmart produced by the Durban Filmmart Institute is Africa s leading co- production and finance market. Beyond the Pitch and Finance Forum, DFM 2024 offers an enriching industry programme featuring masterclasses, panel discussions, and roundtables with some of Africa s foremost filmmaking professionals. They not only explore historical legacies and their lasting effects but also highlight the vibrant interaction between cultural preservation and innovation. These ideas are vital for deepening our understanding of the social, environmental, and ethical contexts that influence contemporary African societies and their filmic representations. Scheduled for July 19 to 22, 2024, the 15th edition of DFM, under the banner, African Visions Unleashed: From Disruption to Accountability, will host a dynamic four- day event in Durban, South Africa
Nollywoodweek Film Festival Holds On May 2
THE 11th edition of the Nollywoodweek Festival will open on May 2 at the Cinema L Arlequin in Paris, France and will close on May 5. The festival aims to raise the profile of Nigerian cinema and African cinema in general. The programme for this diet will include screenings of short and feature- length films, professional meetings and round- table discussions. The promoters, Okada Media Association, have hinted that this year the festival is opening its doors to virtual reality films as well as animation and video games. The festival will screen four virtual reality films from four regions of the continent, including, Daughters of Chibok, which echoes the terrible kidnapping of 276 Nigerian schoolgirls in April 2014. Founded by Serge Noukoué and Nadira Shakur, the Nollywood Week film festival has been held every spring since 2013.
Celebrated Valeria Golino Is Back In Cannes For Special Rendezvous
CELEBRATED actress and later day director Valeria Golino will be in Cannes this year. Twice invited to the Official Selection with her films Miele ( 2013) and Euforia ( 2018), she will be back this year for a special rendezvous. She has just adapted Goliarda Sapienza s great novel L’arte della gioia ( The Art of Joy) for the screen, starring Jasmine Trinca, Tecla Insolia and Valeria Bruni- Tedeschi. Initially shot as a TV series, The Art of Joy will be released in movie theaters in Italy. On the occasion of this event, the first episode of the series will be previewed, followed by a dialogue between Valeria Golino and the audience. Moderator: Guillemette Odicino. Meanwhile, the Cannes Classics selection, created 20 years ago, once again features celebrations, restored prints and documentaries. It will be marked by the presence of great artists: Faye Dunaway, Wim Wenders, Sylvia Chang, Costa- Gavras, Raymond Depardon, Marco Bellocchio, Ron Howard, Frederick Wiseman, Dong- ho Kim, Montxo Armendáriz and more, to visit the history of cinema with those who preserve and restore our heritage, those who distribute and show films, film librarians and laboratories, festivals from all over the world, public institutions, 2024 festival- goers, loyal Cannes Cinéphiles accredited members and young Three Days in Cannes spectators. Also, the Canadian actor, director, screenwriter and producer Xavier Dolan will be the President of the Un Certain Regard Jury of the 77th Festival de Cannes.
