- By Gloria Nwafor

THE Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria ( CITN) has urged its over 28,000 professionals registered under the institute to demonstrate commitment and make valuable contributions to the ongoing reforms in the tax and fiscal landscape in Nigeria. To do this effectively, the institute said members must be fortified with the right skill set, and be distinctive by the depth of knowledge possessed and the level of professionalism they demonstrate. President and Chairman of Council, CITN, Samuel Agbeluyi said this during the institute’s 50th induction ceremony, in Lagos, where about 605 inductees became members.

He said with the various pieces of training, conferences, workshops, seminars and specialised training programmes organised by the institute, members must update themselves on new developments in the tax system to contribute their quota to the nation’s development and reforms in the tax space. Agbeluyi urged the newly inducted members to project the institute positively through ethical conduct and by always striving for excellence.

He cautioned that as a regulatory measure, the council of the CITN has established an investigating panel with the authority to examine cases of professional misconduct involving members. The CITN chief stressed that the institute has intensified engagements with relevant strategic government institutions on the need to place at the helm of affairs, tax professionals in relevant Ministries, Agencies and Departments ( MDAS) to perform tax and related functions.

He expressed the institute’s commitment to supporting the current government to achieve its objectives, which he added have appraised and deemed to be highly beneficial to Nigeria and Nigerians in the long run. The Special Guest of Honour and Executive Chairman, Kwara State Internal Revenue Service, Shade Omoniyi, who spoke about how the state has played a vital role in promoting the tax profession, highlighted some key areas for the institute’s consideration as Nigeria navigates an ever- evolving global landscape.

Stating the need to adapt to the digital economy and to promote tax fairness and transparency, she expressed confidence that the CITN would continue to play a vital role in ensuring a robust and efficient tax system that fuels Nigeria’s sustainable growth and prosperity.

Guest Speaker and Managing Director, CSDC Consulting Enterprise Solutions, Akinyele Oladeji, spoke on ‘ Modelling a True Tax Professional’.
