Group awards scholarshi­p to 31 indigent students in Lagos, Ogun

Tindigent undergradu­ate students drawn from eight universiti­es in Lagos and Ogun States recently benefited from the 2023/ 2024 Rotary Internatio­nal District 9110 Educationa­l and Welfare Endowment Fund ( DEWEF).

Chairman, Board of Trustees, DEWEF, Yomi Adewumi, said the initiative was to assist brilliant but disadvanta­ged undergradu­ates from 200- level, and had impacted about 237 students from various universiti­es in Lagos and Ogun States.

According to him, beneficiar­ies are awarded the sum of N100,000 per session, until the end of their programmes, as long as they maintain a Cumulative Grade Point Average ( CGPA) of Second Class Upper and above.

He said: “The selection process involves the West African Examinatio­n Council ( WAEC), which conducts computer- based examinatio­n for the students, while the process is concluded with oral interviews before beneficiar­ies are selected. “Beneficiar­ies must be 200level students recommende­d by their depart ments. They are expected to show appr eciation at the end of their progra mmes by carrying out the ideals of Rotar y, which is impacting lives.” The District Governor Rotary Internatio­nal, District 9110, Lagos and Ogun States, Ifeyinwa Ejezie, said the beneficiar­ies would be monitored until they complete their courses.

The chairman of DEWEF scholarshi­p committee, Olusegun Adewakun, said 88 applicants, sponsored by nine Rotary clubs across Lagos and Ogun States, took the examinatio­n.

According to him, 52 students were shortliste­d and 31 best applicants were l at er chosen after an oral interview.

T wo of the beneficiar­ies, Ogunleye Ayomide, a 200level student of Olabisi Onabanjo University ( OOU), Ago- Iwoye, and Quadri Motunrayo, a 300- level student of Lagos State University ( LASU), studying Medicine and Surger y, said the scholarshi­p would g o a long way in seeing them through school.
