Meghan, wife of Prince Harry, gave birth to a baby boy, Archie, the first mixed race child to be born into a senior position in British royalty in recent history.

• 2018 - UK

Arsenal got a 5- 0 victory over Burnley in Wenger’s last home game in charge of the London outfit. After the games, Arsene Wenger bid an emotional farewell to the Emirate faithful as he began the final days of his time in charge of the club.

• 2013 - USA

Three women, Amanda Berry, 27; Gina Dejesus, 23; and Michelle Knight, 32, who went missing about a decade ago, were rescued in a building in Cleveland. Three brothers, Castro, 52; Pedro, 54; and Onil Castro, 50, were arrested. On May 8 Ariel was charged with kidnapping and rape of the three women. His two brothers were not charged. He pleaded guilty to 937 counts in a deal to avoid death penalty.

• 2010 - Nigeria

Goodluck Jonathan, 52 was sworn as president hours after the death of Pres. Umaru Yar'adua, 58, vowing that electoral reform and fighting graft would be his top priorities.

• 2009 - S/ Africa South Africa's parliament elected Jacob Zuma as

president. He won 277 votes in the 400 member National Assembly. Zuma's African National Congress won elections with 65.9 per cent of the vote.

• 2008 - Nigeria

Niger Delta militants said that ex- US Pres. Jimmy Carter had agreed to act as a mediator if invited by the Federal Government. The group promised to declare a ceasefire if amnesty talks went ahead.

• 2004 - Nigeria

Lawmakers in Kano State approved Sharia law calling for Muslims to be whipped and Christians jailed if caught drinking alcohol

• 2001 - Syria

In Syria, Pope John Paul II became first pope to enter a mosque when he prayed in the Great Umayyad Mosque. He called for brotherhoo­d between Christians and Muslims.
