Building collapse: CORBON urges FG to enforce national guideline

- By Victor Gbonegun

TO stem building collapse, the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria ( CORBON) has charged the Federal Government to enact a law that enforces the provisions of the National Building Code ( NBC), which has been approved by the Federal Executive Council.

CORBON also urged the government, in the interim, to issue Executive Orders on compliance of all building construction in the country with the provisions of the National Building Code.

The Chairman of the Council, Dr Samson Opaluwah, stated this in Abuja while making the position of the council known on the recent spate of building collapses across the country.

Specifically, he said, to stem building collapses, the immediate enforcement of the provisions of Sections 2.44 and 2.62 of the NBC ( 2019), which requires the submission and usage on site of Builders Construction Methodology, Builders project quality, project health and safety plan and construction programme prepared by a registered builder in the con

struction of building projects.

Opaluwah suggested that state governments and local councils should domesticate the NBC to ensure sanity and professionalism in the built environment and development throughout the country.

He recommended the prioritisation of the enforcement, and enactment of building regulations and standards to include stricter penalties for non- compliance with the state's planning and development laws, and the creation of appropriately staffed building

control agencies as a matter of priority where they currently do not exist.

"These agencies should comprise registered professionals whose core competence is in building and are actively involved in building construction, design, and management.
