The Chairman, Continental Reinsurance Plc and a former Chairman, Punch Nigeria Limited, Chief Ajibola Ogunshola, has been awarded the fellowship of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria.

Ogunshola was honoured during the 2018 graduation and fellowship awards ceremony of the CIIN in Lagos on Thursday, which was well attended by stakeholders in the insurance industry.

Two other insurers, the General Manager (Life), LASACO Assurance Plc, Mr Oladimeji Olona, and a Non-executive Director, Wheel Insurance Limited (Guernsey United Kingdom), Mrs Izilen Okosun, were also given the fellowship awards, while 138 others got associate awards.

The President, CIIN, Mr Eddie Efekoha, said, “Today is a special day for us in the insurance industry; a special one because we will not only at this event be awarding three fellows; two by examination and graduation, but also one by way of contribution to our industry.

“I want to specially congratulate our elder in the industry, who is well known as the doyen of actuarial business in the insurance industry in Nigeria and in Africa, Chief Ajibola Ogunshola.”

Efekoha urged the awardees to show greater commitment to the institute in the propagation of insurance and all its offerings.

“As a body tasked with providing the human capital needs of the Nigerian insurance industry, the institute is dedicated to promoting the ideals of professionalism and will continue to exercise its statutory responsibilities as provided in Act NO. 22 of 1993 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he stated.

The guest speaker, Mr Tope Smart, while speaking on the theme, ‘Insurance industry and professional integrity,’ said professionalism was important in boosting consumer confidence and that customer satisfaction was central to successful business.

Smart, who is also the chairman of the Nigerian Insurers Association, said, “To be a true professional, you must make expertise your tool; do more than expected because professionalism exceeds expectation; do what you say and follow exceptional guiding principles.”

During the event, the best students in some selected examination categories were awarded prizes.

Ogunshola gave the appreciation speech on behalf of the other fellows.

he said, “On behalf of the three of us that were awarded fellowship today, I thank the president and the board of trustees of the institute for taking the decision to give us this award. When you are honoured by your colleagues, the first thing that occurs to you is to remember all those you have studied and worked with.

“We dedicate these awards to all those whom we have come across in the practice of insurance. For the students who are graduating today, I wish you well. You have started a special journey today, and at least one of you, possibly two or three, will become presidents of the institute one day. So all of you should try and achieve that.”
