Bayelsa win bas­ket­ball tour­ney

Bayelsa State’s fe­male bas­ket­ball team have emerged win­ners of the sev­enth 2019 an­nual Women Elite Em­pow­er­ment Ini­tia­tive af­ter beat­ing their Delta State coun­ter­parts in the fi­nal on Sun­day.

The fi­nals of the 10-team cham­pi­onship drawn from all parts of the coun­try took place at the week­end at the in­door hall of the Sam­son Si­a­sia Sta­dium, Ye­nagoa, where the Bayelsa team out­played Delta, beat­ing them 29-17 to emerge cham­pi­ons.

At the well-at­tended tour­na­ment, Ek­iti and Cross River states were placed third and fourth re­spec­tively, among other states Ebonyi, Rivers, Edo, Katsina, Imo and Anam­bra that also par­tic­i­pated.

Or­gan­ised by the WESIE in col­lab­o­ra­tion with the Bayelsa State Sports Coun­cil rep­re­sented by two-time Olympics cham­pion and Com­mis­sioner for Sports, Daniel Igali, the cham­pi­onship saw the girls dis­play­ing ex­cep­tional skill and bril­liance dur­ing the game.

The founder and direc­tor, WESIE, Funke Adeniji, ex­plained that the event was part of the or­gan­i­sa­tion’s ob­jec­tives to em­power women in the coun­try.
