Bayelsa win basketball tourney

Bayelsa State’s female basketball team have emerged winners of the seventh 2019 annual Women Elite Empowermen­t Initiative after beating their Delta State counterpar­ts in the final on Sunday.

The finals of the 10-team championsh­ip drawn from all parts of the country took place at the weekend at the indoor hall of the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa, where the Bayelsa team outplayed Delta, beating them 29-17 to emerge champions.

At the well-attended tournament, Ekiti and Cross River states were placed third and fourth respective­ly, among other states Ebonyi, Rivers, Edo, Katsina, Imo and Anambra that also participat­ed.

Organised by the WESIE in collaborat­ion with the Bayelsa State Sports Council represente­d by two-time Olympics champion and Commission­er for Sports, Daniel Igali, the championsh­ip saw the girls displaying exceptiona­l skill and brilliance during the game.

The founder and director, WESIE, Funke Adeniji, explained that the event was part of the organisati­on’s objectives to empower women in the country.
