Bayelsa win basketball tourney
Bayelsa State’s female basketball team have emerged winners of the seventh 2019 annual Women Elite Empowerment Initiative after beating their Delta State counterparts in the final on Sunday.
The finals of the 10-team championship drawn from all parts of the country took place at the weekend at the indoor hall of the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa, where the Bayelsa team outplayed Delta, beating them 29-17 to emerge champions.
At the well-attended tournament, Ekiti and Cross River states were placed third and fourth respectively, among other states Ebonyi, Rivers, Edo, Katsina, Imo and Anambra that also participated.
Organised by the WESIE in collaboration with the Bayelsa State Sports Council represented by two-time Olympics champion and Commissioner for Sports, Daniel Igali, the championship saw the girls displaying exceptional skill and brilliance during the game.
The founder and director, WESIE, Funke Adeniji, explained that the event was part of the organisation’s objectives to empower women in the country.
