The Nigerian Postal Service has disagreed with Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, over the current balance of an account set up for the collection of N50 electronic stamp duty.

Ahmed had last week, reportedly disclosed that the balance of the account was N43bn.

however, addressing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, the Post Master General, Bisi Adegbuyi, said the balance was N45.8bn.

he insisted that the postal agency was the rightful organisation to collect stamp duty.

The labour union in NIPOST had accused Ahmed of planning to ‘kill’ the agency by transferring the collection of stamp duty from NIPOST to the Federal Inland Revenue Service.

Adegbuyi observed that the finance minister might not have the exact information because NIPOST was actually in charge of the said account.

“The Post Master General will want to tell you today that what is in that account as at Friday 13th of December is N45.8bn not N43bn as earlier mentioned because the account was created in the name of NIPOST to collect the N50 charges which are different from what the FIRS is collecting, and different from what the state board of internal revenue services are collecting.”
