Police comb creeks for abducted C’river NLC chairman
THE police in Cross River State have begun a manhunt for the kidnappers of the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ben Ukpepi, who was abducted from his residence on Tuesday.
The police said they were combing the creeks to rescue Ukpepi, who was whisked away from his CROSPIL Estate residence in the Akpabuyo Local Government Area of the state around 8pm.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo, told our correspondent on Wednesday that the police were already combing the creeks to rescue Ukpepi.
“Our men moved to the creeks this morning. They are on it. So, let’s wait for the result before the end of the day,” she said.
it was gathered that Ukpepi received a phone call before he was abducted.
A source stated that the NLC chairman was outside with some persons taking fresh air when he decided to go inside the house.
The source stated, “When he went inside the house, he received a phone call. Because of the noise inside, he decided to come outside to take the call and that was when his abductors struck.
“The persons he was with in the compound waited for him for some minutes to return, but when he did not, they went to check on him and he was nowhere to be found. That was when they realised what had happened.
“They saw his slippers and pair of glasses on the ground without any trace of him.
His abductors also took his phone. His family have been calling his line, but it has been switched off since. His abductors have not made contact with his family up till now.”
