13 re­manded for loot­ing burnt Ondo church

AN Ondo State Mag­is­trates’ Court sit­ting in Akure, on Tues­day, or­dered the re­mand of 13 per­sons for al­legedly loot­ing a church, Soti­to­bire Praise Chapel, Oshinle,

Akure.

The de­fen­dants, who were ar­raigned by the state po­lice com­mand, in­cluded Udeme Eyo, Ikechukwu Njoku, Ay­o­dimeji Ji­moh, Bamisaye Ojo, Ba­lo­gun Ay­o­mide and Steve Adekunle.

Oth­ers are Se­san Agbi, Stephen Omo­to­sho, James Omog­bo­la­han, Ade­mola Aderibigbe, Ro­timi Oluwadare, Ayo Ife­dayo and Sa­muel Shitu.

They were al­legedly caught with the prop­er­ties of the church af­ter it was set ablaze by some res­i­dents of Akure, who protested the ab­duc­tion of a one-year-old boy, Gold Ko­la­wole, in the church dur­ing a Sun­day ser­vice last month.

The founder of the church, Alfa Ba­batunde, and six other mem­bers had been ar­raigned be­fore the same court on Mon­day for al­legedly aid­ing the kid­nap­ping of the boy.

The sus­pected loot­ers were ar­raigned on six counts bor­der­ing on mur­der, ar­son, theft and van­dal­ism.

The po­lice pros­e­cu­tor, Mr Moses Adeo­sun, prayed the court to re­mand the de­fen­dants in the Olokuta Cor­rec­tional Cen­tre pend­ing the out­come of on­go­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tion into the mat­ter.

Af­ter the ar­gu­ments of Adeo­sun and the de­fence coun­sel, Mr Femi Saliu, the mag­is­trate, Mrs Char­ity Adeyanju, ruled that the de­fen­dants should be re­manded in the cor­rec­tional cen­tre and ad­journed the case till Jan­uary 3, 2020.
