NSCDC averts herdsmen, farmers’ clash in Rivers

The Punch - - METRO - Chukwudi Akasike, Port Harcourt

THe Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Rivers State Command, said it averted what would have been a major clash between herdsmen and farmers in the Etche Local Government Area of the state by resolving a dispute between both groups.

The state NSCDC Commandant, Muktar Lawal, who said the corps was able to achieve the feat through its Agro-allied Rangers Team, added that the herdsmen and farmers were currently living in harmony following the intervention.

He pointed out that apart from preventing the herders and farmers’ clash in the state, the corps had also ensured a peaceful co-existence between the herdsmen and their host communities.

Speaking in Port Harcourt while parading suspected oil thieves, Lawal said, “With the coming of the Agro-allied Rangers Team, you hardly hear of herdsmen and farmers’ clash in the state.

“This is as a result of the rigorous enlightenment campaign embarked upon by the corps among the herdsmen and the host communities on the need for peaceful coexistence.

“So far, this unit has been able to mediate in disputes between the herdsmen and some communities in the state. The corps has also intervened in a crisis between the host communities in the Etche Local Government Area and some herdsmen.

“Efforts are still ongoing to ensure lasting peace between members of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria and members of the Farmers Association of Nigeria.”
