We’ll respond soon on 14 Edo Assembly seats – INEC

The Punch - - TODAY - Friday Olokor, Abuja

THE Independent National Electoral Commission has said that it is still studying a letter from the Edo State House of Assembly demanding that bye-elections be conducted in the 14 constituencies that had been declared vacant.

The INEC Director of Voter Education and Publicity, osaze oluwole-uzzi, stated this in an interview with our correspondent, in Abuja, on Monday.

He also said the commission would, with necessary legal advice, respond as soon as members of the state parliament resume from their current recess.

The Clerk of the Edo State House of Assembly, Audu omogbai, had on behalf of the Speaker, Frank Okiye, petitioned the commission demanding that bye-elections be conducted in line with a resolution of the House on the issue.

The PUNCH had reported that members representing owan East and oredo East constituencies were accused of not attending House sessions since June 18, 2019, while 12 other members were accused of not showing certificates of return from INEC.

The Assembly also said the 12 members did not present themselves for inauguration, even though the parliament had been performing legislative functions since June 17, 2019.

The affected constituencies are: Ovia South West, Etsako West Constituency I, Esan Central Constituency, Egor Constituency, owan West Constituency, and oredo West Constituency.

Others are Etsako West

Constituency II, Etsako Central Constituency, Uhunmwode Constituency, ovia North East Constituency I and ovia North East Constituency II.

oluwole-uzzi told our correspondent that the commission “conducts byeelections whenever it is informed of vacancies by the presiding officer in either chamber of the National Assembly or any state House of Assembly.”

He said, “The commission is studying the letter and will respond to it soon and make its position known, when members are back and after getting legal advice.

“INEC frequently conducts bye elections whenever it has been informed of vacancies by the presiding officer in either chamber of the National Assembly or any state House of Assembly.”
