THE Rector of the Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu, Mr Samuel Sogunro, has urged students’ associations and union leaders in the institution to ensure accountability, sustainability and good leadership skills.

Sogunro made the plea at a workshop on leadership and accountability for Departmental, Religious and School Associations organised by the Directorate of Students Affairs of the institution recently.

The theme of the workshop was, “Students Association: Sustaining Academic Excellence in Tertiary Institutions.”

“It is no gainsaying that the function and importance of the students union in any institution cannot be overemphasised. That is why the dream of this administration is to establish a platform to intensify continuous engagement of the polytechnic students’ union executives to enhance their leadership virtues for effectiveness.

“We organised this workshop for associations and students union leaders in order to reach every student in the institution,” Sogunro said.

The Rector added that the association leaders were the mouthpiece of other students, hence, the need to train them on roles and ways to be good leaders.

“Management of the institution is contributing a lot to sustain academic excellence among the students. Students should know that polytechnic education programmes are very robust, and will help them to do things on their own by being employers of labour after graduation.

“We also introduced compulsory Computer and Agriculture programmes for all students in the institution so that they can contribute to food security in the country,” he said.

The Acting Dean of the Students Affairs, Mr Ayobami Olomiyete, advised the associations and union leaders to re-engineer their mindset on becoming good leaders.
