Bauchi denies Mohammed’s illness, blames opposition, mischief makers

The Punch - - TODAY - Armstrong Bakam, Bauchi

THe Bauchi State Government said it had noted with concern “rumours being peddled by some mischief makers” suggesting that Governor Bala Mohammed, “is bed-ridden and would not be back anytime soon to perform his leadership duties.”

The Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Governor, Mukhtar Gidado, had in a statement on Sunday night said Mohammed had been hospitalised.

The media aide, in the statement, quoted the governor as saying, “I am in a hospital in London, but we strongly believe that Allah is sufficient for us and He is able and capable to give us victory! Cheers, success shall be ours Insha Allah! Cheers to you all.”

But the government, in a fresh statement signed by Gidado on Wednesday, refuted reports that the governor was bedridden.

He said the governor only had an appointment with his doctor in a hospital in London where he had a minor procedure and after which he went back to his temporary abode that same day.

He said, “Some members of the opposition have, in the wake of the ongoing Supreme Court case, unfortunately insinuated that His Excellency is in the United Kingdom for the ‘long haul’ because of what they term to be his deteriorating health condition.

“I wish to state that this dubious line of thought exists only in the wicked and diabolical world of the rumour merchants.

“Our governor was away on medical appointment with his doctor, had a minor procedure and returned to his temporary abode same day. He even had a road walk barely three hours after the procedure.”

Gidado said those who were active on social media must have seen a picture that the governor personally posted, “looking rested and cheerful.”

“I can confirm to the good people of Bauchi State that our governor will be joining us soon as he personally indicated in a social media feed this morning.

“The governor extends his appreciation for the endless prayers, phone calls and messages he has been receiving from the kind and loving people of our state in particular and other well wishers across Nigeria,” he added.
