Owena Kings win, Edo lose again in handball league
OWENA kings of Akure on Sunday defeated Correctional Boys 17-16 in a clash of two relegated teams at the National Division One Handball Championship in Benin City, Edo State.
Both teams were battling for an immediate return to the elite division after they were relegated last term, but it was the Akure team that won the closely-fought battle that drew applause from the spectators.
Owena kings coach Ronke Saliu was in high mood after the win, following their 16-16 stalemate against Akwa Ibom in their league opener on Saturday.
“It was a fine outing by the players despite the tight nature of the game. Our opponents, who dropped from the elite division with us, were very strong but we did the necessary things to secure the win,” she told The PUNCH.
“Again, we were determined to win having the draw in our opening game. So, a win was the only result that would make up for our opening day lapses and I am happy we got it.
“Our aim is to return to the elite division and we will achieve this by taking the games one after the other,” Saliu added.
