Lagos arraigns 10 for allegedly grabbing company’s land

THE Lagos State Government has arraigned 10 suspected land grabbers before a special offences court sitting in oshodi over allegation­s of forceful takeover, trespass and grabbing of land belonging to Nichemtex Limited in Ibeshe, Ikorodu.

The defendants, who pleaded guilty, were arraigned by the Lagos State Special Taskforce on Landgrabbe­rs on four counts, contrary to Section 3 of the Lagos State Properties Protection Law 2016 and sections 350 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The 10 defendants are Amisi Friday, Holy osaweme, wale Adigun, Muhammad Amodu, Christophe­r James, Tope ojo, Usman Abubakar, Jubril Isa, Yusuf Babamariam and Sherifu Ibrahim.

The defendants were said to have encroached on acres of land owned by Nichemtex Limited, a subsidiary of the United Nigerian Textiles Public Limited Company Plc between year 2019 to 2021 in owode Ibeshe, Ikorodu, Lagos.

According to the Coordinato­r, Lagos State Special Taskforce on Landgrabbe­rs, owolabi Arole, the defendants were arrested following an investigat­ion of a petition dated May 5, 2020, by the United Nigerian Textiles Plc.

Arole said the defendants were arraigned before Chief Magistrate oluwatosin Fagbohun after the task force and the police detailed investigat­ion on the landgrabbi­ng matter.

He noted that the office gave the parties involved the opportunit­ies to state their version of events in order to determine the culpabilit­y of the parties.

In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Fagbohun granted bail to the defendants in the sum of N100,000 each, with two sureties in like sum.
