Xiaomi overtakes Apple as second largest smartphone vendor
Xiaomi is now the second largest global smartphone vendor based on worldwide shipments in the second quarter of 2021.
This is according to a new report from Canalys. The Chinese company captured 17 per cent of the global market share, according to the research firm, just behind Samsung’s 19 per cent but ahead of Apple’s 14 per cent.
BBK’S Oppo and Vivo rounded out the list of top five vendors at 10 per cent apiece. Xiaomi shipped 83 per cent more phones in the quarter under review than in Q2 2020, whereas
Samsung grew shipments 15 per cent and Apple by just one per cent.
Canalys said that global smartphone shipments grew by 12 per cent in the quarter under review. It also added that much of the growth seen by smartphone makers is at the expense of Huawei, which has been shut out of the worldwide market due to Us-imposed sanctions and trading bans.
