How vested is your interest?

- TONYE COLE

I heard a very interesting description of the bible recently where it was described as a simple book that required one of two attitudes to unlocking it; you either believed it or you didn’t. A halfway approach left you in a precarious neverland, never quite sure if you are operating in the realm of reality or fantasy. This neutral position, though seemingly benign happens to be of such distaste to The Lord, He prefers your complete unbelief to it. At least everyone knows where you stand. Such it seems is the political landscape at play in Nigeria today, with the concluded primaries as a perfect backdrop to test the pulse of a nation.

Reflecting on the contrast between the U.S. Democratic Party primaries that ushered in Obama and ours, I was distraught in body and spirit of how such a monumental occasion, indeed the most critical of stages in the political agenda of any nation, could pass with but a fleeting interest of Joe Public. Like was the case of the U.S. process, the event was aired live for all to see yet there was a marked difference of interest and expectation between both. Deeply vested in the process and outcome of Obama’s election was the Nigerian public, a group of people whose opinion mattered little nor had the power to vote. Yet where it ought to have matters most, this interest, the emergence of who might govern us next was largely ignored by most Nigerians.

My thoughts drifted back to God and His ways. What, I ask, would He expect of a people who lose all interest in their leaders? How, I ponder, would He react, to leaders who lose touch with their followers? His was the best example given to us to follow. The people, groaning under the weight of oppression cried out in desperation to Him and He, seeing that sin had separated His followers from Him, became a sacrifice to bring the people back to His fold. Leaders, unwilling to serve sacrificially, will forever alienate their people, whose cries The Lord hears and His judgement is sure and fair.

Do you believe in your leaders?

God guide your decisions today.
