MAKEUP MISTAKES YOU ARE MAKING

- BY Karen Eloke Young

The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. – Audrey Hepburn People are like stained - glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within. – Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

Isn’t it just awful when you catch a glimpse of your reflection in a car window and realize that your makeup isn’t as great as it looked in your bathroom mirror. Truly awful. But most times this happens to women who are used to doing their makeup in a certain way, and are unable to break away from this routine hence the ‘ayamantaga face’ in natural light. Whether you dab on way too much blush or your face powder has given you a pancaked look, here we will explain the six makeup mistakes that you are making over and over again.

Drawing on Clownishly Exaggerated Eyebrows

Granted, not every woman was born with a thick set of brows, however that does not mean you should pick the darkest eyebrow pencil you can find and fill away. It never ends up looking great. Even worse is the ultra-thin eyebrows which just look extra trashy. Instead of going ape with your brow filler why not get your eyebrow brush, direct your brow hairs upwards at a 45-degree angle and fill in carefully. Use an eyebrow pencil or filler that is one shade lighter than your natural hair colour. Be sure to focus on the outer part of your brows from arch to tail.

Neglecting to Apply Primer

What your primer does is bring down the shine on oily skin. When wearing makeup, smooth on a mattifying face primer before you apply your foundation. Always have touch up products in your purse to ensure you stay dry and polished throughout the day.

Putting on too Much Blush

Always keep in mind your skin tone when applying your blush - nothing will make you look crazier than too much or badly applied blush on your cheeks. For perfect application, use the old smile technique and swirl the brush directly on the apples of your cheeks and then blend back towards your temples. make sure the blush is well blended and almost melts into your skin. If applied correctly, blush can take years off your face and brighten your complexion.

Choosing the Wrong Under-eye Concealer

What this very common makeup mistake actually does is bring unwanted attention to what you are actually trying to camouflage. Be sure to test the concealer at the back of your hand, if it is too light then chances are, it is too light for your face. And if you do get the perfect shade, dab to the under-eye area, working from outside to the inner corners. Next, even out your complexion with foundation and set with your powder.

Wearing the Wrong Foundation

Your foundation should look so invisible that people should be wondering if your skin is really that perfect. To achieve this, always test your foundation on your jaw-line in the daylight. If it disappears, it’s the right shade. Do not forget to always apply foundation down to your neck for a more blended look.

Over-powdering

This mistake is so common in this part of the world that it is now affectionately called “over-pancaked face”. It may seem like a task but it’s easy to avoid looking too “pancaked”, choose a light powder and use it only where needed. Do not powder overexcessively over oily skin without using blotting papers first.
