WHO WILL FILL THE VACUUM?

- TONYe Cole

It was one of those strange weekends when you find yourself on a couch with absolutely nothing to do, no weddings, no birthdays, no guests and no one to visit. The economic crunch is really taking its toll on Nigerians, determined to squeeze our jolly, jovial nature into something we hardly recognize. As I was wondering what to make of the day, a call came through from a young man I know with a zeal and passion for Nigeria far beyond most of his peers. Our conversations are often deeply philosophical and spiritual, exploring ways his generation can influence and impact our nations fortunes now and in years to come.

This day was different. In his voice was the sound of defeat, of one broken by the rigors of fighting a battle no one else seemed concerned about. “Bros”, he said, “do you recall the story you shared of why you ended up focusing on building your business”? I did so he continued, “I am at that point now. I am so disillusioned with politics and this government. We believed so much in change but there is nothing our generation has to offer that they want or are interested in. It is time I just focused on earning a living” he concluded. This was dejavu and a bad case of it too for 20 years ago my generation did the same and abdicated politics to a category of individuals who totally destroyed the institutions that should have made us great. We are paying a heavy price today for our cowardice.

The God of Creation abhors vacuums. It stands for nothing, holds nothing and believes in nothing. Sooner or later it is either filled with that which is good or that which is evil. In His design of the universe, He gave everything a place and created a purpose for all things. Over all these He placed man to be His representative and guardian and to us He gave control to dispense leadership and govern with righteousness, commanding us to be fruitful and multiply. We are to nurture and grow the next generation of leaders as tomorrow’s outcome is determined by our actions today. Nothing would be worse for our future than once again disenfranchising another generation from seeking to lead this nation today. What does your tomorrow look like? May God give us the fortitude to stay strong in these trying times.
