Lovely laali (nigerian HENNA TATTOOS)

Henna is a great way to create designs on your skin without the permanent effects of a tattoo. In various parts of the world, women have an ardent love for beautifying their bodies however, indulge in body decorations for various reasons; some go for it to enhance their beauty, while others do it for religious or social reasons. In the northern part of Nigeria, the use of henna is an established practice used to adorn brides and celebrated as part of the marriage rites. Traditionally, the laali is used to cleanse the bride and it’s believed to be a sign of fertility and love between the couple. The use of colourful, artfully henna has however, spread to different parts of the country. Nowadays, women from other parts of world have joined the lalli body decorating wagon, thus recreating a traditional art into a contemporary fashion statement. The designs are unique, colourful and attractive, each craft lasts up to two weeks or more depending on the ingredients used. The Henna Place based in Lekki, Lagos was opened to bring traditional Northern beauty therapies to Lagos in place of permanent tattoo (which is foreign, costly with various health hazards) when the owners realised there wasn’t anywhere to get their regular fix of beauty treatments, and as such are willing to share those treatments with other women. Dealing in different temporary body art offering women the opportunity to have their bodies uniquely designed by special body artists to add glamour to their everyday look.

Laali is a name used for either the leaves of the plant or the stain made by the pigment. The orange red dye from the laali leaves is used to decorate the body including the legs, palms and finger nails. What stands a designer from other is the creative combination of plants and flower patterns to create fresh designs. Unlike the modern tattoo where needles, tracing outlines and machines are used, the lalli painting is different.

First one has to get the mixture ready after which it is out in a nylon bag with a tiny hole made at the tip or any appropriate narrow-tipped receptacles. When pressed the lalli comes out into the desired patterns . When this is completed, wash off with ordinary water. At this point the design is not visible until, a cotton wool deeped in hydrogen and water solution is used to clean the decorated area. It is after this process that the design will begin to show.
