ART OF ACCESSORIZING
Have you ever wondered why some people regardless of gender seem to look good no matter what they wear? They could be rocking just a pair of pants and a plain top and yet still come out stylish; and they might not even be wearing a name brand! Besides their personality that they add to it, it’s really all about accessorizing. Changing the way, you look can be as simple as how the right pieces are combined.
“Where did you get that from?” are common questions you get from people when they admire your accessories and how it compliments your look. Accessories make great fashion pieces and may sometimes be the very thing that make your outfit standout. Here are a few accessorizing tips.
BOLDER ACCESSORIES: Accessories can add complexity and interest to a plain look, balancing everything out. A plain dress or even a pair of pants and top can be complimented with a layered or tiered neckpiece. You can accessorize a black dress with an African necklace that has multiple colours instantly changing the look from boring to stunning. When an African woman wears the typical traditional wear and she combines it with beads which adds more glam to the way she looks. However, when wearing clothing that is already bulky with volume and details, it’s important to scale back on the necklace.
BELTS, SCARFS & BROOCHES: Do you know that simply using a belt like a wide waist belt is a fashion statement on its own and can help achieve a slimmer waistline or over a flowy dress. A scarf with a brooch on your blazer adds interest to the outfit. There are now shoe brooches that you can clip on plain pumps to give it that boost. Don’t be afraid to mix and match these accessory pieces tastefully.
LONG LAYERED NECKLACES: Try blending colours or beads, play with the length of the necklace, and get creative! They create long vertical lines which make you look taller and
leaner! You can also pair long beaded or layered by starting with the shorter ones first, slightly chunkier pieces and then the longer ones last. When layering they don’t need to have a pendant especially if you are going for a more simplistic look. Depending on the clothing you are pairing the necklace with, it’s not a bad idea to do one colour or consider combining different designs and colours in the same family to achieve an edgier look.
These are just a few of many tips you can incorporate into your wardrobe. Accessories can add complexity and interest to a plain look, balancing everything out. Don’t wear too many things at the same time; sometimes less is more and simplicity is classier. Most importantly, don’t lose yourself in the process by letting your accessories convey a part of your personality.
