Before l wrote this article, someone described the making of Arise Fashion Week as the ‘grind to the glitz’ and l instantly said l was going to make it my headline because it was the most apt description! The AFW runway has seen global fashion icons and leading models such as Alek Wek, Liya Kedebe, Oluchi Orlandi and others showcase the best of African fashion. And this runway was no different as we had the legend, Naomi Campbell and ‘model of the moment’ Imaan Hammam stun the audience with their graceful strut on the catwalk. Even after a six year hiatus, ARISE Fashion Week 2018 held its prestige as the premier event where the global fashion elite once again converged.

There are too many people to thank for the many sleepless nights, the unbelievably long hours, the pushed-to-the-limit scenarios and so much more. Behind every successful show is the most incredible ‘backstory’ and I’ve been saying this for a long time...we should do a reality show next time because there are just too many interesting incidents behind the scenes. It took a lot of sweat to put a show like this in place and l want to use this opportunity to say a very big THANK YOU to everyone who played a role in making the show a success.

What I have found most amazing so far about this show were the five male models that were scouted by an international agent. Our models did not only look great, they proved their mettle.

One day you are being casted and a few days later you are doing a photoshoot with Naomi Campbell! Or you are an emerging designer one day, and a few days later, your clothes are being photographed and featured in Vogue magazine! This is what happened and THAT to me, is what featuring in Arise Fashion Week can do!

Well worth the effort...

Ruth Osime (Co-Creative Director, ARISE FASHION WEEK)
